A Letter from

Dr. Karen Warren Coleman

Eugene McDermott Head of School

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students, I offer my sincere gratitude for your commitment to the mission and continued growth of The Hockaday School. Your generous support is a catalyst for the exceptional education that this School provides to every Hockaday girl throughout every phase of her life.

Our campus is filled with energy and enthusiasm. Students are learning and growing in new ways and seeking opportunities to expand horizons, share their voices and talents, and serve the greater community. Our dedicated teachers, advisors, and coaches are reimagining the extraordinary student experience and equipping each girl for her brilliant future.

During this very different school year, Hockaday remains financially secure as a result of conservative management of the Endowment and prudent oversight of the budget. This is due in large part to your generosity that makes it possible for us to offer the finest curricular and co-curricular opportunities for our students. Your generous investment enables us to provide student and faculty programs, enhance affordability and access, and work toward achieving our strategic goals.

This Annual Report of Gifts details Hockaday’s progress during the Academic Year 2019–2020.  I am pleased to share the following highlights:

  • The Annual Fund, which helps fill the more than $8,000 per-student tuition gap, exceeded $2.3 million this year;
  • The Endowment totaled over $156 million at the close of the year; and
  • The re-opening of the Historic Horseshoe entrance and the debut of the Levering Family Daisy Circle and the Debby Hay Spradley Promenade created a welcoming entrance for visitors, created vibrant new community-gathering spaces, and enhanced safety and security on campus.

As we know, tuition alone does not cover the cost of a Hockaday education. Your support, through annual gifts and endowments, underscores our responsibility to develop in every girl her own confidence, enthusiasm, character, and success.  Thank you for your commitment to support Hockaday girls as they continue to strive for excellence. We remain committed to providing the best possible resources to enrich their unique journeys.

With enduring appreciation,

Eugene McDermott Head of School
